Chapter Fourteen

The ruckus caused them to leave the confessionals and the tombs to see what was going on, and Viggo led the pack. He ran to the gates, remembering not to use his vampire power of speed to get there, though it was hard. He heard the screams; the humans running all over the place, forgetting what their roles were in the event of an invasion.

Viggo ignored them, running to Christopher as he held his gun through the metal slats of the gate, firing when he could get one in his sights.

“Christopher, keep them away from the gate. I’ll send the others to the walls to fight off the ones trying to get over them!”

“Yes, Father! I’ll keep ‘em back!”

Grey ran to him, his own fear unsettling. “Viggo, what’s happening?”

“That group told you of these invaders. They’re here,” was all he said as he ran to the southern wall to catch two people jumping down after crawling over the top.

Viggo’s head spun to check all around him, and once he saw none of the humans would catch him, he violently grabbed their hair in his fists, moving his fists together until he heard the crunch of their skulls crashing into one another.

Grey gasped loudly, and Viggo’s temper broke. “Should I have let them in to kill all these humans you’ve grown so fond of?”

That sobered him. “No, of course not.”

“Help or go.”

Grey followed him closely as Viggo ran to another area of the wall, catching one as he fell to the ground after jumping over the top. He grabbed the skinny man and made a quick feast of him while Grey went after another and made him disappear completely.

Letting the man fall dead, Viggo wiped the stray blood from his lips and asked, “Where did you send him?”

“Away. He’s…alive, but he couldn’t possibly return. Unless he can swim across an ocean.”

Viggo smiled despite himself. “That’s evil, Grey.”

“He’s alive.”

“And alone, likely with no one around for miles,” he reminded him, then stopped smiling as he saw it hit home for Grey. “We can all be evil at times, Grey, even if our intentions were…not.”

Grey grabbed him and kissed him, right there, in front of the world. Or that was how it felt at first. They were cloaked in darkness, invisible to anyone not right up close, and after a few seconds of Grey’s persistent kisses, Viggo gave in and grabbed his face, holding on for what felt like his very life.

The kiss ended as abruptly as it began. “I’ll…I’ll let you get others. I don’t have to watch. Go and I’ll head the other way. If I send more, that man won’t be alone.”

“Your goodness will be what ends you, Grey,” Viggo said with a hand on his cheek.

“Then so be it.”

Viggo ran from him to head to where a group of his people were running from. He slowed enough to tell them to head into the kitchen and hold the door to anyone except their people.

He found a group of
